This is a very impressive 3CD set from Mosaic Records, that traces Sam's first Blue Note recording in 1964 to his final session for the label in 1967, Sam Rivers made impressive progress as an avant-garde innovator. Starting with an inside/outside hard bop foundation, Sam quickly took his music as far out as he could while maintaining a recognizable structure; his work fearlessly explored wildly dissonant harmonies and atonality, dense group interaction, and passionately intense, free-leaning solos.
The Complete Blue Note Sam Rivers Sessions traces that development chronologically and flawlessly, over the course of 3CDs, including the entirety of his four albums as a leader: the relatively straightforward 'Fuschia Swing Song', the avant-bop masterpiece 'Contours', the radical album of standards, 'A New Conception', and the galvanizing, brilliant avant-garde classic 'Dimensions and Extensions' (which also comprised Rivers' half of the split double-LP Involution with Andrew Hill). Five alternate takes are also added, including three of "Downstairs Blues Upstairs."
What amazes just as much as Rivers' imaginative originality is how consistently rewarding all 3CDs are. Rivers may not be quite as much a household name as some of his equally forward-thinking peers, but any jazz fan remotely interested in the avant-garde should know that this set constitutes some of the finest avant-garde jazz Blue Note ever released -- the music here should be considered a cornerstone of any self-respecting avant-garde collection.

Being British/Australian, midnight snacks are not within our culture.

DeleteLately I've been waking up and getting out of bed around one AM. When I do this I'll make peanut butter toast. A sugarless peanut butter on a whole grain toast.
ReplyDeleteWhatever easy to eat fruit we have at the house. Strawberries, cherries and blueberries are all in season now, so I just grab a small handful of one.
ReplyDeleteBig fan of Sam Rivers -- only had this set in mp3 so thank you for the upgrade!!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy MrDave!
Delete2 or 3 spoonfuls of ice cream & a slug of milk. All from the carton. Therefor, no calories (or dirty dishes).
ReplyDeleteA peanut butter and banana sandwich is my go to midnight snack.
ReplyDeleteIf I'm out late, there's a 24/7 Falafel joint near where I live. Usually I'll get a Falafel on a pita, with veggies and tahini sauce. Sometimes I get hummus.
A midnight (often more like 1 AM snack) is often necessary because you start to get hungry again, so a good old banana will often do the job...
ReplyDeleteNo midnight snacks here, strict diet for past 20 years or so. Thanks Babs
ReplyDeleteWhat type of diet are you on, mumbles?
DeleteA self inflicted diet. I was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic in 2001 because I was obese & lazy. (Very true) Dr. advised me to get off my butt & walk, also cut sugary carbo laden food out. I began walking 2 miles in a half hour, every day. I stopped drinking Coca-Cola, cut way back on pastas, breads, potatoes & the like. I was able to avoid medicines to control it for 15 years, but by then I needed a pharmacy to help regain control. Still keep to my diet even with chemical amusement aid to assist with diabetes & bp. I am 75 lbs lighter now than I was in 2001, & I average anywhere between 5 - 7 miles a day walking. I don't eat after 8pm and breakfast is usually between 7am - 8am, still self inflicted, but by now it's a habit (kinda like any other I s'pose). Thanks Babs

Well the wife brings home all sorts of weird and wonderful creations that she gets cheaply or for free on shopping apps from Pepperami 'Pizza Buns' to chocolate covered energy bars. There are some rather delightful salted caramel energy bars in the larder as we speak. Coco Pops or other cereals are also a fav but the all time top dish which because of its content I have to ration to once or twice a month is crunchy Peanut Butter (has to be crunchy) and Blackcurrant jam/jelly on toast washed down with a cuppa. Delicious.
ReplyDeleteGuess I should get some bananas.
ReplyDeleteBack in the mid '70's I discovered fried boloney sandwiches. 2 friends and I left southern California and headed for Alaska to get jobs on The Pipeline. We stopped at my Aunt & Uncles house in Seattle. My aunt served us all we could eat fried baloney sandwiches. First home cooked food we'd had in days and totally new to us. We ate a lot. Was it mayo or mustard? Maybe both. I don't remember. But we kept eating.
ReplyDeleteLater we got busted in Vancouver. But that's another story.
Not exactly food. I daren't eat late at night, it wakes the dogs and they'll want some too.
ReplyDeleteHere's the Andrew Hill half of the record
