'The Atlantic Singles Collection 1967-1970' is a 2CD set and features 34 singles which Aretha released during her first three years with Atlantic Records.
Arranged chronologically, the songs on the new collection originally appeared on six studio albums, 'I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You' from 1967, 'Aretha Arrives' also from 1967, 'Lady Soul' from 1968, 'Aretha Now' from 1968, 'Soul ’69', 'This Girl’s In Love With You' from 1970, and 'Spirits In The Dark' from 1970. The only exception is Franklin’s cover of Elton John’s “Border Song,” which was released as a single in 1970 and later appeared on her 1972 album 'Young, Gifted and Black'. Many of Aretha's best-known songs, including the nine #1 R&B hits “I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You),” “Respect” (also a Pop #1), “Baby I Love You,” “Chain Of Fools,” “(Sweet Sweet Baby) Since You’ve Been Gone,” “Think,” “Share Your Love With Me,” “Call Me” and “Don’t Play That Song.”
Several of the songs on this collection are cover versions that demonstrate Aretha’s exceptional skill at reinterpreting music and
making songs her own. Among the highlights are her versions of Sam
Cooke’s “You Send Me,” The Band’s “The Weight,” The Beatles’ “Eleanor
Rigby,” and Dionne Warwick’s “I Say A Little Prayer,” which became a
Billboard Top 10 hit for Aretha in 1968.
This entire set is in Mono mixes of the 60s which, by definition, center everything, as opposed to relatively rudimentary early stereo mixes which crudely split instruments and vocals between left and right channels, often to the detriment of the rhythm section's impact. On many of the Motown and Stax records, there's a night and day difference between the punchy mono mixes and their anemic stereo counterparts. Aretha's voice just feels much more prominent here, out in front, not as buried, and very balanced.
This collection shows how the Queen of Soul earned her crown.

Oh Hamlet, definitely.
ReplyDeleteSammy "Two Toes" Tiffin, he gets into all kindsa fun/trouble with an incredible cast of characters like Eddie "Moo Shoes" Shu, a terrible little kid (he really is terrible), no he's not, you turnbuckle! A black mamba & the "nut sack guys", the moon man & in the end Sammy winds up with "The Cheese"! The books are Noir & Razzmatazz by Christopher Moore. Thanks Babs
ReplyDeleteAlso we were lucky enough to see Aretha Franklin next to the Mississippi River at sundown, when she almost literally kicked the mayor of Memphis off the stage after he gave her the key to the city!
Jessica Rabbit.
ReplyDeleteShe'll bake you a carrot cake.
DeleteHercule Poirot
ReplyDeleteI've just finished watching the new version of "Death On The Nile". It was...okay-ish..?! Took a long good while to get going...
DeleteI've never read any Agatha Christie until this year, Hercule has been in them all so far. He is an outstanding character, along with his moustaches. Thanks Babs
Delete@One Buck Guy - try the 1937 novel.
DeleteI'd love to sit in a café with Hercule, drinking Romanée-Conti, discussing this thing we call life.
@mumbles - what's your favorite so far?
DeleteThe Murder Of Roger Ackroyd, it was the first of 3 that I've read so far. The others were Murder On The Orient Express, followed by The ABC Murders. 2 more in the set, Evil Under The Sun & Five Little Pigs. I'll get back to Agatha again soon. Right now I'm finishing The Arrest by Jonathan Lethem. I believe my next book will be The Naming Of The Dead by Ian Rankin. Reading, walking and listening to music, it's kinda what I do best these days. Thanks Babs
DeleteI can't imagine life without books, and walking fast (passing alleged joggers) while listening to music.
DeleteLivin' the good life, right on!
DeleteHave you tried Yoga? I know many guys think it's a "girl's thing", but what it will do for your mind and body is nothing short of amazing. AND, as a bonus, you'll meet some very cool people.
DeleteThanks Babs. I did try yoga once (or twice) in an ashram in Kansas City, I think &, my best friend Reno's brother taught Yoga, but I never picked it up. I tried Tai Chi for a brief period in 1974. I did learn TM in 75, but quickly shoved it aside for the next 40 or so years. Around 2015 I contacted them & actually started doing it. I've stuck with it for several years now, it seems to help.
DeleteRegarding meeting very cool people, I come here for that, this place is a bonus. Thanks Babs
Little Nemo, I'd love to accompany him on his wild trips in Slumberland!
ReplyDeleteGood ol' Slumberland! Such a wonderful place..,
DeleteWhen I was young it might have been Freddie The Pig. As I got older it was Fear & Loathing with Hunter S. Thompson, but he wasn't fictional. In the last few years it might be Sam Spade. Currently, I'm not so sure.
ReplyDeleteone Halloween I dressed as Eric of Melnibone. But if I had to choose a fictional friend, It would probably be Jerry Cornelius.
DeleteI would probably NOT pick Zaphod Beeblebrox as a fictional friend.
DeleteDoes Sam Spade do friends?
DeleteYou are correct. Sam Spade works alone.
DeleteJust call Dr Thompson "Raoul Duke" (see below) & call it good. I got dibs on the suitcase, though.
DeleteAh, the suitcase: Two bags of grass, seventy-five pellets of mescaline, five sheets of high-powered blotter acid, a salt shaker half full of cocaine, and a whole galaxy of multi-colored uppers, downers, screamers, laughers …
DeleteApart from the cocaine, I'm right there with you.
Can always swap the cocaine for more raw ether.
DeleteOr adrenaline. Then throw the tape deck in the bathtub.
Delete'Jerry Lee' the German Shepherd in K-9. Who else but man's best friend?
ReplyDeleteHeyduke Lives!
ReplyDeleteAs long as we're getting "out there". I'd pick Bugs Bunny as a friend.
ReplyDeleteRace Bannon from Johnny Quest. Travel the world and kick villians' asses.
ReplyDeleteLove Race Bannon!
DeleteI awoke in the middle of the night the other night. Watched Maya. I don't want to live in India.
ReplyDeletestarred Jay North (Dennis the Menace)
DeleteIgnatius J. Reilly because he would do most of the talking about things I know nothing of.
ReplyDeleteNick and Nora Charles, for the non-stop repartee.
ReplyDeleteAnd the non-stop cocktails.
DeleteI'm in. And their dog Asti is the answer is in every crossword.
DeleteNick and Nora sit down at the bar.
DeleteThe bartender asks Nick, "What can I get you"
Nick replies, "Two Martinis"
Nora interjects, "I'll have the same".
Raoul Duke
ReplyDeleteOf course, I'd settle for just being friends with his suitcase...
DeleteIt's a toss up between Betty Cooper and Auntie Mame
