I've had this for about a week and a half, and only just got around to listening to it.
This is Boz's third album of standards, "But Beautiful" from 2003 and 2008's "Speak Low" are beautiful recordings of primarily Great American Songbook classics. However, 'detours' is clearly different. With these earlier recordings, Boz was backed by larger ensembles. 'detours' involves sparse arrangements performed in trio or quartet formats of primarily acoustic piano, guitar, bass & percussion.
'detour' creates a very intimate setting for a late night jazz club vibe. Goes nice with Elijah Craig 12-year-old Bourbon.
Enjoy!

Thanks Babs, looking forward to listening. Listening to Virtuoso right now, you are (of course) correct, incredible sound. Thanks Babs
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure it was the summer or fall of '72 when "Dinah Flo" hit the airwaves. I quickly purchased "My Time" (still an all-time fave) and the previous three, and acquired every subsequent release. He still has "it" !!
ReplyDeleteAs a teenager in the 70's I came to Boz via Silk Degrees and then acquired his other album's over time - even the Steve Miller ones he's on - so thanks for this.
ReplyDeleteThanks Babs I had all of Boz from his first solo album. Can't say I like this at all after only one listen. Many of the other artists also doing "American Standards" also leave me underwhelmed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Babs! I l count Boz Scaggs among the handful of white guys who can put across blues, R&B, and soul material without ever sounding forced. Even Jagger at times bugs me with his trying-too-hard emulations of greats like Solomon Burke, Bobby Womack, et al. I'm looking forward to hearing Boz's renditions of these classics. I was just listening to his CD, Come on Home, a personal favorite, and not to be missed by Boz fans.
ReplyDeleteHere's a digitization I did of Mr. Scaggs King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show, sourced from a 1980 concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York City: https://mega.nz/file/HFRDBSaQ#ysdzbKeZMF-mgp85cXH1rgBRw6hC4SN40cqrdFaQFo8
