Joe Zawinul was one of the most well regarded jazz pianists/keyboardists in the history of the Jazz. He was one of the masterminds behind Weather Report and played on classic albums by Miles Davis and Cannonball Adderley.
This album is not as well known among his discography, but it deserves to be. The music is atmospheric and dreamy, with pretty melodies driving most of the songs.
Joe calls this album:
"Music for two electric pianos, flute, trumpet, soprano saxophone, two contra basses and percussion."Some people consider this the real first Weather Report album, as two other Weather Report founding members, Wayne Shorter and Miroslav Vitous are on this recording. Conceptually, and sonically, they have a point. It is also the link between Weather Report and Miles Davis' keyboard-laden experiments on the album 'In a Silent Way', the song "In a Silent Way" is redone here, in the more complex form in which Joe envisioned it.
With two keyboardists, Joe and Herbie Hancock, the album’s foundation is laid. Their work is complemented by spacey sound effects created using an Echoplex tape delay effects unit and a ring modulator, which is a sound-sculpting tool.
In the liner notes (included in the freeload), Miles Davis contributes a brief, but generous tribute to Joe:
Zawinul is extending the thoughts that we've both had for years.Track 1 "Doctor Honoris Causa".
And probably the thoughts that most so-called now musicians have not vet been able to express.
P.S. Dig the two drummers and Herbie with the echoplex-and the clear funky black soprano sound—and the setting that Woody has to play in. All these musicians are set up. Joe sets up the musicians so that they have to play like they do, in order to fit the music like they do. In order to fit this music you have to be "Cliché Free.
In order to wnte this type of music, you have to be free inside of yourself and be Josef Zawinul with two beige kids, a black wife, two pianos, from Vienna, a Cancer and "Cliché Free."
"Dedicated to Herbie Hancock for his Honorary Doctorate at Grinnel University in Des Moines, Iowa."
Track 2 "In a Silent Way" which is very different here than the version on the Miles Davis album.
"Impressions of Joe Zawinul's as a shepherd boy in Austria."
Track 3 "His Last Journey"
"A tone poem reminiscent of his grandfather's funeral on a cold winter day in an Austrian mountain village."
Track 4 "Double Image" is a different version of the song that was originally recorded for Miles' 'Bitches Brew', it went unreleased until "The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions" released in 1998.
"A concept of what man thinks he is as opposed to what he really is."
Track 5 "Arrival in New York"
"Joe Zawinul's first impression of New York when he arrived here as a boy on a ship from France."
Joe Zawinul – acoustic and electric piano
Herbie Hancock – electric piano
Hubert Laws – flute
Woody Shaw – trumpet
Wayne Shorter – soprano saxophone
Miroslav Vitouš, Walter Booker – bass
Jack DeJohnette, Billy Hart, David Lee, and Joe Chambers – percussion
For the freeload, tell us what the weather was like today, where you live.

Rain rain rain, wind and rain (13 degrees celcius)
ReplyDeleteHi everyone, it's 17°C in Flensburg, cloudy, and it looks like it'll rain soon. Typical for Northern Germany. Best regards, Mike
ReplyDeleteRainy in Seville. But, we need the autumn rains, since we go 5 to 6 months without a single drop.
ReplyDeleteChilly and Sunny- temps in the low 40's. Northern New England
ReplyDeleteIt's sunny, warm & too dry here in east Texas.
ReplyDeleteANON RF: Currently living in Islington UK. Drizzly all day. No joke: Wet leaves carpet the park across. Red busses hissing by (ta, Jim Morrison). Kids screaming madly in the schoolyard nearby. Folks walking idly past with umbrellas up, all veddy Buddittish.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to this one, always been a fan of Joe.
ReplyDeleteAlmost fog like pink sky this morning, partly cloudy now, can see the sun peeking out in NE Ohio.
Light breezes & sunny later, an expected high in the upper 50's today, almost perfect for bagging leaves from 2 maples & 1 of the neighbor's oak trees.
Probably not much chance for viewing the aurora borealis as its supposed to be mostly cloudy this evening. Thanks Babs
Like the previous comment by Richard, here in Oxford UK it's been raining non-stop for several hours, which is forecast to continue over the weekend as a result of Storm Claudia - so seriously thinking of building that Ark!!
ReplyDeleteNear the Siskiyou Crest in southwestern Oregon, it's still morning and temps are yet to hit the 40s (ºf). A salmon-colored sunrise promised rain later, and living in the woods after our hot dry Mediterranean-like summer, every drop is welcome.
ReplyDeleteWe're still in the process of moving, but 50F, gorgeous & sunny here in the DC metro area...looking forward to more of this and leaving behind the Greater Lower Colorado River Authority Wetlands Resource Area & Balcones Escarpment...though Ima miss the music, 'cue and the pockets of Ol'Austin...some...
ReplyDeleteBTW - Your listing of personnel on the lp excluded Earl Turbinton on sax. Great sax player out of NO (brother to Willie Tee, who might be better known), who Zawinul actually invited to be a member in Weather Report. Here's a link to a brief bio about Earl: https://homeofthegroove.blogspot.com/2007/08/earl-turbinton-remembered.html
ReplyDeleteI don't know how left Earl Turbinton out!
DeleteI had several mutual friends with Earl. Earl would often crack the same joke after a gig, both good ones and bad: "and, I could have been in Weather Report."
DeleteEarlier today on my morning walk, it was sunny and a little chilly at 38°F (3°C), here in Manhattan. It’s now midafternoon, a little cloudy, but the temperature went up to 50°F (10°C).
ReplyDeleteRaining in Portland, Oregon. What a surprise.
ReplyDeleteYou inspired me to dig this LP out of the archive and am playing it as I type.
Sunny with a little cloud and 25c (77f) although for this time of year the mornings are still quite cool - well for Sydney anyway!
ReplyDelete65 degrees and sunny. hopefully the link will show up in the comments as the email I registered here is now broken ...
ReplyDelete52 degrees F, cloudy, frequent rain
ReplyDeleteCrazily warm/mild for the season, 19 degrees Celsius
ReplyDeleteOvercast, Drizzle but not much of a breeze and like some other places surprisingly warm for the time of year. Its barely dropped below 10 degrees C here yet (it reached 15 c (59F) again today and if this carries on we could see winter bulbs flowering before Christmas. They certainly are well advanced this year. Of course I'm probably tempting fate but if I am perhaps it will lead to the first white Christmas we've had here that I can remember?

DeleteI'm staying with friends for the weekend in a different corner of California from where I live. Sunrise has happened with a mix of clouds and blue sky, with no fog on the bay. I expect we might see some rain showers, but the deluge isn't expected until tonight. The temperatures should say within hailing distance of 60F all day.
ReplyDeleteD in California
the high on monday was 47, yesterday the high was 77 in central arkansas
