Wayne Shorter - 'Schizophrenia'

Wayne Shorter recorded 'Schizophrenia' on March 10, 1967, at Van Gelder Studio, in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, but it wasn't released until May 1969 on the Blue Note label.  At the time, Wayne was two-and-a-half years into a five-and-a-half-year association with Miles Davis.  This was Wayne's eleventh album as a leader, and his eighth for Blue Note.

Along with Wayne's tenor saxophone, the front line is James Spaulding’s alto saxophone or flute, and Curtis Fuller’s trombone, with the rhythm section of Herbie Hancock's piano, Ron Carter's bass, and Joe Chambers' drums.

On this album, Wayne strikes a perfect balance between his stint as musical director with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers during the first half of the 1960s hard bop era and the innovative musical forms he was developing for his bandmates to explore with Miles Davis second great quintet.

'Schizophrenia' would be Wayne's last "straight-ahead jazz" album for a few years.  On his ninth Blue Note release, 'Super Nova', made two-and-a-half years later, Wayne incorporated multiple guitars and percussion (with a decidedly Afro-Brazilian orientation). He offered his own perspective on the new sounds that Miles Davis was exploring on the 1969 recordings In A Silent Way and Bitches Brew.

The freeload is a Japanese remastered, limited edition, reissue CD, from 2021.

  3. Black coffee on ice. Gives me the get-up-and-go to get up and go on hot steamy days.

A friend of mine in Seville was slated to play with Shorter on a quick tour he was going to do in Spain in 1985 - Manuel Callega, a great acoustic bassist. First stop was Madrid, and Manuel, together with Guillermo McGill (drums) and a pianist met Wayne a few days before to rehearse. Night of the first gig, they get the devastating news that Wayne's 14 year old daughter died. They assumed all the gigs would be canceled so that Wayne could deal with his grief. Instead, Sorter took the stage in Madrid, and played for 90 minutes, solo, and continuous. He walked off the stage, got into a waiting car and headed home. Manuel says its the most emotional thing he has ever heard, or witnessed, in his life.

  6. As a standalone drink: sparkling water with a healthy splash of pomegranate juice. Accompanying any spicy cuisine like Mexican, Indian, Thai:, etc: a crisp lager such as Kingfisher.

    1. I've never heard of Kingfisher before, but in the Indian restaurant I was yesterday, that was the only beer choice. It was pretty good...

    1. Being British, my mum was dismissive of anything other than actual black tea from a proscribed list of varieties such as Orange Pekoe being referred to as tea. In particular, she strongly opposed using the t-word to describe herbal drinks—and being a Brit she pronounced the aitch in the term scornfully when referring to such herbal decoctions.

Just before my first daughter was born, my best friend Reno & I went and had several drinks on a really hot afternoon, Gin & lemonade, my oh my. I believe that we should probably have stopped sooner than we did. They were just soo good & went down so easily.
Hope your weekend extravaganza was exactly that & lotsa fun. Thanks Babs

    1. Last week was in Provence, and had one of the best wines I have ever tasted, a 2023 rose appropriately called Aix.

    2. Anon RF: Damn Seriously, I was in Aix 3 weeks ago. Gorgeous town! Five nights in Aix then four in Avignon, with a day in Arles (my highlight). Did you get to the Cezanne extravaganza? They opened the house he grew up in for the first time in years, and have about a 100 artworks on display til end of Oct.

    3. We were only there for 2 nights and the extravaganza started the next day. Absolutely loved Aix. Also went to Marseille (glad we went, but once is enough) and Fontainebleau for a manouche music fest. Will return for the same fest next year, and also will return to Aix. Wife really wants to see Arles, so that will probably replace Marseille next year.

    4. Rented a villa just outside of Aix a few years ago. Loved it. Day trips for a wine tour, a food tour and over to Avignon and down to Cassis. Beautiful country and wonderful people. Stumbled into a tiny bistro. The owner spoke no english and his daughter who really ran the place, broke her hand, so was off that night. We had a great meal and terrific wine and he did not know how much to charge us. So he sat with us a we tried to talk about the world. I think we got our of there ( 6 people ) for about 100 euros.
      Great adventure

    5. Pmac, my family lived in Marseille for nine months when I was turning 13 (many decades ago), and I can agree with your assessment. It has a lovely Corniche, the climate is agreeable, and there are a dozen other Mediterranean cities that I'd rather go to. If I ever get to the south of France again, I'll visit Marseille, but I'll spend time in Avignon, Arles, and Aix.

    7. Marseille is beautiful, but currently, it reminds me of New Orleans, and not in a good way. The main inlet is filled with at least 500 docked sailboats, and yachts, that take away from the beauty of the area. Venture off not more than a mile from there, and you find some unbelievable poverty and squalor. I imagine back in your mom's era, it was completely different.

  14. I used to dance (as a performer) at the Renaissance Faire in Novato, CA, where temperatures often were hot. I learned that water was a wonderful hot weather drink, and have continued my hydrating habits to this day. I also like sparkling water, and dilute lemonade.
I'm a big fan of white wines in warm weather, like Verdejo, Albarino, Gewürztraminer, Chenin Blanc, blends of Semillion & Sauvignon Blanc (usually not either one by itself), Viognier, blens of Marsanne & Roussanne blends (and no harm with some Viognier in there), and of course Riesling! (I'll also drink Chardonnay, but I often like other whites better, especially in hot weather).
But cocktails with fruit juice can be great too, especially the citrus-based ones like Margaritas. :^)

This summer while whilst I discard all my excess weight (its still coming off ~ another stone shed) its just water or sparkling water more's the pity but otherwise it would be an ice cold lager. San Miguel with a slice of lime or even a Bud. Kingfisher's good as well. Or on draught probably Coors or if I can get it Hurlimanns bottled or draught (a local UK brew based on an old Swiss recipe) which was a go to beer of my youth. I must see if I can find any local sellers of it as I'm in the right part of the UK to get it.

Full coke, again ice cold, hits the spot as does a Tall Black Russian, using Kalhua rather than Tia Maria with plenty of ice and either full coke or Pepsi to top it off during the day. Kahlua is just that bit lighter on the palate and its all finished off with just a dash of cold espresso just to hype up the caffeine that bit more.
