Bob Dylan - 'Genuine Live 66'

Bootleg label Scorpio put out this 8 CD set entitled 'Genuine Live 66' in 2000.  If you are into Dylan enough to start hunting down bootlegs of his material, then this set is essential.  Like the official 'Live 66' album it covers his tour of that year, unlike the official release though, it goes into far greater detail on every level.  The 1966 world tour, is arguably the peak of pre-motorcycle crash Dylan, when our anti-hero was strung out on amphetamines and desecrating acoustic folkie expectations night after night for an audience that largely hated him

This set collects together concerts from Australia, England, Ireland, Denmark and Scotland, and packages them in the box in full color paper jackets inside mini "LP" gatefold cardboard sleeves along with two detailed booklets crammed with info and great pictures, three postcards and a poster (all included in the freeload).  Far more love and attention has gone into this than many "official" releases.

Recorded from the original 3-track source tapes, quality is superb throughout, which when coupled with the stellar performances really impress.  Both electric and acoustic performances are first-rate, and you can tell Dylan is on top form throughout this tour.  One of my personal favorites are the acoustic tracks recorded at the Gaumont Theatre in Sheffield, which are real gems.  One of the great things about Bob's live performances is his passion and interest in the songs and constant effort to try and keep them fresh, whether through completely altering lyrics and jumbling things around as in a lot of his later concerts, or as he does here, by really living the words and bringing out all the little subtleties and nuances in each song.

I love the electric version of "I Don't Believe You (She Acts Like We Never Have Met)" that he was playing on this tour, especially the May 14 version from Liverpool.  You can hear him give an amusing (probably amphetamine fueled bunkum) explanation of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" according to which the song is about a painter, Tom Thumb, who was from Juarez but living outside Mexico City, and, "When Tom Thumb was going through his blue period, this was one of the most important times of his whole life." Bob repeatedly performs his mumbling trick, wherein he quiets the crowd by murmuring indistinctly into the microphone, which prompts everybody to shut up, the easier to discern the word of their oracle.

  2. She was working in a topless place
And I stopped in for a beer
I just kept looking at the sight of her face
    In the spotlight so clear
And later on when the crowd thinned out
I's just about to do the same
She was standing there in back of my chair
Said, "Tell me, don't I know your name?"
I muttered something underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face
I must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces of my shoe
    Tangled up in blue

  3. Thanks Babs,
She was there in the meadow where the creek used to rise
Blinded by sleep and in need of a bed
I came in from the East with the sun in my eyes
I cursed her one time then I rode on ahead

  8. Life is sad, life is a bust
All you can do is do what you must
You do what you must do, and you do it well
I'd do it for you, honey baby, can't you tell?

  9. Darkness at the break of noon
    Shadows even the silver spoon
The handmade blade, the child's balloon
Eclipses both the sun and moon
To understand you know too soon
There is no sense in trying

But don't ask what it means. Just a favorite.

  11. No one tried to say a thing
When they carried him out in jest
Except, of course, the little neighbor boy
    Who carried him to rest
And he just walked along, alone
With his guilt so well concealed
    And muttered underneath his breath
    "Nothing is revealed"

In fact, I love not just the words, but Dylan's spirited singing throughout this song.

  12. Down the street, the dogs are barkin' and the day is a-gettin' dark
As the night comes in a-falling, the dogs will lose their bark
And the silent night will shatter from the sounds inside my mind

Time is a jet plane, it moves too fast
    Oh, but what a shame
That all we've shared can't last
And I can change, I swear
Oh, see what you can do
    I can make it through
    You can make it too

Where I's lucky for to be employed
Working for a while on a fishing boat
    Right outside of Delacroix

You say, "How are you?", "Good luck", but you don't mean it
When you know, as well as me, you'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once and scream it?

  16. Ain't it just like the night to play tricks when you're tryin' to be so quiet ?
We sit here stranded, though we're all doing our best to deny it
And Louise holds a handful of rain, tempting you to defy it
Lights flicker from the opposite loft
In this room the heat pipes just cough
The country music station plays soft
But there's nothing really nothing to turn off
Just Louise and her lover so entwined
And these visions of Johanna that conquer my mind.

  17. I dreamed I saw St. Augustine
    Alive with fiery breath
And I dreamed I was amongst the ones
That put him out to death
    Oh, I awoke in anger
    So alone and terrified
I put my fingers against the glass
And bowed my head and cried

  23. Babs, you stole my verse and my favorite Dylan song!
    How about this one:
Just then Tom Paine himself came running from across the field
Shouting at this lovely girl and commanding her to yield
And as she was letting go her grip, up Tom Paine did run
I'm sorry sir he said to me; I'm sorry for what she's done.
    Thanks, Babs.

  25. I'm not good at "favorite," but I see several of my faves already. A touch surprised not to see a bit more from around this time... this is one of his "hits" innit?

Though you might hear laughing, spinning
    Swinging madly across the sun
    It's not aimed at anyone
It's just escaping on the run
And but for the sky, there are no fences facing

And if you hear vague traces of skipping reels of rhyme
    To your tambourine in time
It's just a ragged clown behind
I wouldn't pay it any mind
    It's just a shadow you're seeing, that he's chasing

  27. I have a hard copy of this, so I'm not downloading...but if don't have all the scans and want 'em, let me know and I'll scan 'em. Meanwhile, this seems as appropriate now as it did sixty years ago:

While preachers preach of evil fates

    Teachers teach that knowledge waits

    Can lead to hundred-dollar plates

    Goodness hides behind its gates

But even the president of the United States

Sometimes must have to stand naked
