The 13th Floor Elevators - 'Sign Of The 3 Eyed Men'

This is a mammoth 10CD set of The 13th Floor Elevators, and has the original 3 studio albums, each of which has another disc of alternate takes and mixes. There are also two live CDs, and two albums of otherwise unreleased songs and versions, some of which is also live, some studio.

If 'Sign Of The 3-Eyed Men' stopped at simply rounding up mono and stereo versions of the band’s three seminal albums — 'The Psychedelic Sounds Of The Thirteenth Floor Elevators', 'Easter Everywhere' and 'Bull Of The Woods', and capturing their sonic glory with meticulously restored sound, courtesy of the Elevators’ original producer/engineer Walt Andrus, that would be a pretty cool collection.

Toss in all the original masters, all the group’s singles, a clutch of session outtakes, two lost albums of previously unreleased material and Stacy Sutherland’s work in progress — the acetates, the safety masters and the multi-track tapes — for the aborted Beauty & The Beast album.

But wait, there's more! — an assortment of live rarities, some of which are being made available for the first time on record.

The 13th Floor Elevators played at a frenetic pace, always just a heartbeat away from utter anarchy. Their rock ‘n’ roll was primal and basic, the progeny of their ’50s forefathers like Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly, but the Elevators took it to places they never imagined, and this set provides the road map for their long, strange journey.
To get this set, post a verse of your favorite psychedelic song.

  1. "Little Johnny Jewel":

    They just scratching the surface
JJ can do the floor kiss
    Was he on display?
    No, no, not today
    All that guy ever said
He said, "I want my little wing-head"
    He half-asleep at night
Over his head, sensation of flight
    And he wake up dreaming
    Dreaming...
And he run down to the airport
    The rush. The roar
And he crouched down behind a fence
With a chest full of lights
    Then...
    He loses his senses

    "Terrapin Station":

    Counting stars by candlelight
All are dim but one is bright
    The spiral light of Venus
    Rising first and shining best
    From the northwest corner
    Of a brand-new crescent moon
    Crickets and cicadas sing
    A rare and different tune

    "Astronomy Domine"

    Lime and limpid green
    A second scene
A fight between the blue you once knew
    Floating down
    The sound resounds
    Around the icy waters underground
Jupiter and Saturn, Oberon, Miranda and Titania
    Neptune, Titan
    Stars can frighten

    "L Ballade" (Shawn Phillips)

And the myriad reflections of myself
In her buttons on her oversized navy coat
But only reflections and never an image
    In her mind's unfathomable moat
But some castles where she wanders
    Are yet crumbling into dust
In this house of visions on top of the hill
The glass has turned to rust

    1. "Slip Inside This House":

      Bedouin in tribes ascending
From the egg into the flower
      Alpha information sending
      States within the heaven shower
      From disciples the unending
      Subtleties of river power
They slip inside this house as they pass by

      If your limbs begin dissolving
In the water that you tread
      All surroundings are evolving
In the stream that clears your head
      Find yourself a caravan
      Like Noah must have led
And slip inside this house as you pass by

Slip inside this house as you pass by
      True conception, knowing why
Brings even more than meets the eye
Slip inside this house as you pass by

In this dark we call creation
We can be and feel and know
From an effort - comfort station
      That's surviving on the go
      There's infinite survival in
      The high baptismal glow
Slip inside this house as you pass by

There is no season when you are grown
You are always risen from the seeds you've sown
There is no reason to rise alone
Other stories given have sages of their own

Live where your heart can be given
And your life starts to unfold
      In the forms you envision
In this dream that's ages old
On the river layer is the only sayer
You receive all you can hold
      Like you've been told

      Every day's another dawning
Give the morning winds a chance
      Always catch your thunder yawning
Lift your mind into the dance
Sweep the shadows from your awning
      Shrink the fourfold circumstance
That lies outside this house don't pass it by

      Higher worlds that you uncover
Light the path you want to roam
      You compare there and discover
You won't need a shell of foam
Twice born gypsies care and keep
The nowhere of their former home
They slip inside this house as they pass by

Slip inside this house as you pass by
You think you can't, you wish you could
I know you can, I wish you would
Slip inside this house as you pass by

Four and twenty birds of Maya
      Baked into an atom you
      Polarized into existence
Magnet heart from red to blue
To such extent the realm of dark
Within the picture it seems true
But slip inside this house and then decide

All your lightning waits inside you
      Travel it along your spine
      Seven stars receive your visit
      Seven seals remain divine
      Seven churches filled with spirit
      Treasure from the angels' mine
Slip inside this house as you pass by

Slip inside this house as you pass by
The space you make has your own laws
No longer human, Gods are cause
The center of this House will never die

There is no season when you are grown
You are always risen from the seeds you've sown
There is no reason to rise alone
Other stories given have sages of their own

Draw from the well of unchanging
      And its union nourishes on
      In the right rearranging
Till the last confusion is gone
Water brothers trust in the ultimust
      Of the always singing song
      They pass along

      One-eyed men aren't really reigning
They just march in place until
      Two-eyed men with mystery training
      Finally feel the power fill
      Three-eyed men are not complaining
They can yo-yo where they will
They slip inside this house as they pass by
      Don't pass it by

  2. Antique Sandy
    Song by The Byrds
Antique Sandy lived in the woods
And she'd go to the stream when the weather was good
She'd take down the washing for her old man to wear
And she'd try not to get eaten by the bear
She'd fly to the market in her worn out old balloon
That she traded with the flier for an antique silver spoon
And when she'd get home she'd cook upon the wooden stove
And she'd go to sleep and listen to the whispers of the grove
At night she dreamed of places where she lived when she was young
Where the corn strip stretched for miles like a giant serpent's tongue
Electric lights and phone bells and every light insane
Like a hundred thousand hungry miles were meeting at her brain
And I greet her in the morning when she wakes up in my arms
And I tell her that I love her and I'll keep her free from harm
I hold her close, she matters, she is all the world to me
'Cause she's my Antique Sandy, and she's in love with me

African bees, snakeskin's cobra spit through you my medical passes
You can't see, with 3D glasses

"Dantalion's Chariot - Madmen Running Through The Fields"

    "You ask me how
    I've become mad now
    There was a day,
    I had so much say
    What of my feet?
    Life seemed to be sweet
    I was admired
    But I was so tired

    Go through the dam
    Lion and lamb
    Know what you're sayin'?
    Know what you're sayin'?

    Things went okay,
    And then one day, "Pow!"
    I can expound
    With the new words found
    If reasons gone,
    How do I live on?
    Because I know
    Which way I must go

    Where can I go,
    Now that I know
    Time has gone by?
    Time has gone by

    Isn't that the madman,
    Running through the fields?
    Isn't that the madman?
    Wonder how he feels...

    You look at me,
    What do you see now?
    Is it so bad,
    Or am I just sad?
    Are you in doubt?
    There is a way out
    I've seen the crack
    I cannot come back

    I'm not afraid
    Sticks out a way
    Into the tide
    Be by my side

    Isn't that the madman,
    Running through the fields?
    Isn't that the madman?
    Wonder how he feels..."

I found this single in a junk shop in around 1978 only a stones throw from the location of possibly the UK's first independent psychedelic reissue label (Psycho Records) and it cost me 10p. Now you'll be lucky to get a copy of the original single for 1000 times that.

  5. CJ & The Fish - Pat's Song
Bring flowers and ring them 'round her grass hair
Bring leaves from the mountain and boxes of air
Bring baskets of food and things you can share
And the moon will shine in her eyes

She will stand in the sea with her body like sand
And the dolphins will come kiss the palms of her hands
As she opens her soul to the water and land
Her smiles will color the sky

With bottles of light and sacks of clay
With music to dance and songs to play
With lemons and candles you'll see the way
That the moon will shine in her eyes

She will fly on the wind with her face to the sun
Children will dance all around her for fun
Just ask her for love and she'll give you some
For her smiles will color the sky

    And of course, Hawkwind
    I've got an orgone accumulator
And it makes me feel greater
    I'll see you sometime later
When I'm through with my accumulator

    It's no social integrator
    It's a one man isolator
    It's a back brain stimulator
    It's a cerebral vibrator
    Of orgones

    Energy stimulators
Just turn your eyeballs into craters
    But an orgone accumulator
    Is a superman creator

  6. Well HOW-DEE Pardner! I am so glad I poked my head around and discovered that you and yours are doing fine and set up a new camp. I'll pass along some of my favorite verses of the inner most kind to help loosen up the flow for them fine Elevator boys. From Pearls Before Swine's 1968 record "Balaclava";

    Translucent Carriages

    The translucent carriages
    Drawing morning in
    Dawn inside their pockets
Like a whisper on the wind

The soft touch of your words
Has been betrayed like love grown old
    Or the silhouettes of children
    Crying somewhere in the cold

The ancient night is coming back
    The light is fading out
The tree is hid in shadow
In a fog of useless doubt

    Go away go away
    The imperative is drawn
    All your symbols are shattered
All your sacred words are gone

    (The caravans are leaving
    For the dawn of nothing
    Lepers carry roses
    To Jerusalem

    In peace
    Sons bury their fathers
    In war
    Fathers bury their sons

    Love is silent
At the edge of the universe
    Waiting
    To come in

    Jesus raised the dead
    But who
    Will raise the living)

Every time I see you passing by
    I have to wonder why

With warm regards from the Miss', Jr. and myself from the Double X ranch,

    Billy Gates.

  7. Uh, guys...didn't it say "a verse"?!?

    Fine, the whole enchilada then.

See the snow falling on the ground
Days of old, oh so cold
    Wretched sailing amongst the cloud
Melts the snow still I'm cold
    People dancing in the streets
In the town a small boy crys
Eyes of love turn to nerves of stone
Blind the sun, not for me
    A Season goes so quickly
You don't know where you are
    A Season goes so quickly
You don't know where you are
    I said i'm sorry
    Don't you know I try
    Everybody stops me
    And it makes me cry
See the snow falling on the ground
Days of old, cold so cold
    Wretched sailing amongst the cloud
Melts the snow still I'm cold
    People dancing in the streets
In the town a small boy crys
Eyes of love turn to nerves of stone
Blind the sun, not for me

    A Season goes so quickly
You don't know where you are

Someone lays a sheet across my chest
Something warm is flowing down my fingers
Pain is flowing all through my back
I try to move my arms and there's no feeling
And when I look I see there's nothing there
The face beside me stopped it totally bleeding
The girl I knew has such a distant stare
    I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air
    I remember
We were flying along and hit something in the air

  10. I know you've deceived me, now here's a surprise
I know that you have 'cause there's magic in my eyes
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
    Oh yeah
If you think that I don't know about the little tricks you've played
And never see you when deliberately you put things in my way
Well, here's a poke at you
You're gonna choke on it too
    You're gonna lose that smile
    Because all the while
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
    Oh yeah
You took advantage of my trust in you when I was so far away
I saw you holding lots of other guys and now you've got the nerve to say
    That you still want me
    Well, that's as may be
    But you gotta stand trial
    Because all the while
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
    Oh yeah
    I know you've deceived me, now here's a surprise
I know that you have 'cause there's magic in my eyes
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
    Oh yeah
The Eiffel Tower and the Taj Mahal are mine to see on clear days
You thought that I would need a crystal ball to see right through the haze
Well, here's a poke at you
You're gonna choke on it too
    You're gonna lose that smile
    Because all the while
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles
I can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles
And miles and miles and miles and miles

I don't do publicity balling for you anymore
The first word in this song is "discorporate." It means to leave your body

    Discorporate and come with me
    Shifting, drifting
    Cloudless, starless
Velvet valleys and a sapphire sea, wah wah

Unbind your mind, there is no time
To lick your stamps and paste them in
Discorporate and we will begin, wah wah

  12. A few favorites:
    "Boots were of leather
    A breath of cologne
    Her mirror was a window
    She sat quite alone

    All around her
    The garden grew
    Scarlet and purple
    And crimson and blue

    She came and she went
    And at last went away
    The garden was sealed
    When the flowers decayed

On the wall of the garden
    A legend did say:
    No one may come here
    Since no one may stay"

"Turn off your mind, relax and float down stream
It is not dying, it is not dying

Lay down all thoughts, surrender to the void
It is shining, it is shining

Yet you may see the meaning of within
It is being, it is being

Love is all and love is everyone
It is knowing, it is knowing...

... that ignorance and hates may mourn the dead
It is believing, it is believing

But listen to the colour of your dreams
It is not living, it is not living

So play the game "Existence" to the end...
... Of the beginning, of the beginning
Of the beginning, of the beginning
Of the beginning, of the beginning
Of the beginning, of the beginning "

"Oh, let the sun beat down upon my face
With stars to fill my dreams
I am a traveler of both time and space
To be where I have been
Sit with elders of the gentle race
    This world has seldom seen
Talk of days for which they sit and wait
    All will be revealed

Talk and song from tongues of lilting grace
    Whose sounds caress my ear
But not a word I heard could I relate
    The story was quite clear
    Oh, oh
    Oh, oh

    Ooh, baby, I been flying
No yeah, mama, there ain't no denying
Oh, ooh, yeah I've been flying
Mama, mama, ain't no denying, no denying

Oh, all I see turns to brown
As the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand
As I scan this wasted land
Trying to find, trying to find, where I've been

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace
    Like thoughts inside a dream
Here is the path that led me to that place
    Yellow desert stream
My Shangri-La beneath the summer moon
    I will return again
Sure as the dust that floats high in June
    When moving through Kashmir

Oh, father of the four winds, fill my sails
    Across the sea of years
With no provision but an open face
    Along the straits of fear
    Oh, oh
    Oh, oh

    Ooh

Oh, when I'm on, when I'm on my way, yeah
When I see, when I see the way, you stay-yeah
    Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, when I'm down
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, but I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, ooh, my baby, let me take you there
Oh come on, oh, let me take you there... let me take you there
Ooh, yeah-yeah, ooh, yeah-yeah, let me take you there... let me take you there
    Along the straits of fear
Oh, when I want, when I'm on my way, yeah
And my feet wear my fickle way to stay
Ooh, yeah yeah, oh, yeah yeah,
But I'm down oh, yeah yeah, oh, yeah
Yeah, but I'm down, so down
Ooh, my baby, oh, my baby
    Let me take you there
Come on, oh let me take you there
    Let me take you there"

    The horizon breaks to pieces
And the mainline is the twilight
And the giant net has a perfect window
Passage through has the ticket screaming
    I want a mind
I'll tell you what I find
    No severed goddess hand
    No plaster in my eye
    No picture of a lamb
    No goddess hand have I
    I'm a picture of a goddess
Of a planet in the window
Through a tiny hole in the giant curtain
I have watched as it stood undressing
    I want more more eyes
I want to see more lies
In the silence of the neurons
Where the pathway has been printed
There's a gleaming hope for an understanding
Timing's gone and there's been no planning
    Two heads, one dream
    Two-thirds a crowd it seems

    1. Nice one Bat! I was having problems choosing something but Meat Puppets "We're Here" always resonated very strongly with experiences I've had

      "We're Here"

      The night is restless
      But no dream's in sight
And the sounds have no beginnings or ends
And that glow is not a light

      The walls turn into waterfalls
With water made of thoughts that call

It's not okay to tip the glass
Don't smile too long or shed a tear
You're not the only one to know
Things have changed, now we are here

We are not the king and queen
What we are lies in between
The blankets that you've never seen
      But over you are spread

'We are here', the voices sing
We are here, the echo thunders
Here we are, the doorbell rings
We are here and here in numbers

Others came in from the hall
Thoughts with voices start to call

It's not okay to tip the glass
Don't smile too long or shed a tear
You're not alone the way you thought
Things have changed, now we are here

  17. She Wandered Through The Garden Fence - Procol Harum
She wandered through the garden fence
And said, "I've brought at great expense
    A potion guaranteed to bring
    Relief from all your suffering"
And though I said, "You don't exist"
She grasped me firmly by the wrist
Threw me down upon my back
Strapped me to her torture rack
    And without further argument
I found my mind was also bent
    Upon a course so devious
It only made my torment worse
She said, "I see you cannot speak
Is it your voice that is too weak?
Is it your tongue that is to blame?
Maybe you cannot speak for shame
Or has your brain been idle too
And now it will not think for you?"
I hastened to make my reply
But found that I could only lie
Like a fool I believed myself
And thought I was somebody else
But she could see what I was then
And left me on my own again
Like a fool I believed myself
And thought I was somebody else
But she could see what I was then
And left me on my own again
She wandered through the garden fence
And said, "I've brought at great expense
    A potion guaranteed to bring
    Relief from all your suffering"
And though I said, "You don't exist"
She grasped me firmly by the wrist
