Donald Byrd & Pepper Adams - 'The Complete Blue Note Studio Sessions'

This 4CD set from Mosaic Records, are the albums Donald Byrd and Pepper Adams collaborated on, for the Blue Note label during the years 1959 to 1962: 'Byrd in Hand', 'Chant', 'Royal Flush', 'The Cat Walk', and 'Off to the Races', with the Detroit natives at the top of their game.

Donald and Pepper led a variety of groups that featured the likes of Herbie Hancock (his first session), Wynton Kelly, Duke Pearson (who also contributed material), Charlie Rouse, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins.  From excellent covers of standards, to seamlessly complex originals, Donald's trumpet tone, and Pepper's' angular baritone make for a perfect one-two punch.

In typical Mosaic fashion, the audio is the best you'll ever hear these recordings. The Booklet features session photos by Blue Note photographer Francis Wolff and an extensive essay by Bob Blumenthal.

Donald Byrd on trumpet
Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone
Charlie Rouse on tenor saxophone
Jackie McLean and Sonny Red, are on alto saxophone
Wynton Kelly, Herbie Hancock, Walter Davis, Duke Pearson and Chick Corea, are on piano
Sam Jones, Doug Watkins, Laymon Jackson, Butch Warren, Miroslav Vitous, are on bass
Art Taylor, Teddy Robinson, Philly Joe Jones, Billy Higgins, Mickey Roker, are on drums

This is hard bop of the highest order.

To qualify for this freeload, tell us what was the last song you had stuck in your head, or "Earworm" you had?

  1. Yesterday, I had Dionne Warwick's version of 'Message to Michael' stuck in my head.

  2. The most frequent ear worm that gets stuck in my head is the Stone Poneys (I.e., Linda Ronstadt) Different Drum.

  3. Stevie Wonder - Superstion. Started because the announcer introduced it correctly as "Superstition" and I told my wife that the title was "Superstitious". It's a small blessing to have the comfort to argue about the little stuff.

    1. Having "the comfort to argue about the little stuff" is indeed one of the small pleasures of a long term partnership or friendship. Yesterday I was amicably arguing with my friend from Pierrepont St. about whether "time keeps on slipping into the future" -- or if it slips into the past. Potato, otatop.

Recently had the song "Cry Cry" (from Cheap Trick's debut) stuck in my head for several days, and didn't mind it a bit.

  4. Persistent earworm during the last weeks:

Lindsey Buckingham - I Walk A Thin Line.

I literally just hummed it to myself while reading your question, for no particular reason.

  5. Not being a jazz head, my contributions to discussing most music on here will be limited, but Babs, me and a bunch of migrated islanders can probably always agree on the greatness of the Beach Boys.

So, if Babs don't mind, let me just remind you that after having done an alternate version of Carl & The Passions, I now just dropped my alt version of Holland, which I'm sure some Islanders (no, wait, old ways...some, uh, Babsers?) could find interesting and which you can find here:

The write-up, should you have some time to spend on a lazy sunday afternoon ('cause you will need it), was so gargantuan, that I broke it into two parts.

  6. Dance of the Cygnets from Swan Lake. Ms Pmac's favorite ballet and this past Monday, we threw a surprise party for a milestone bday for her, and a great friend, who is a fantastic composer and trumpeter, made it into a jazz piece in her honor. Cappig off the bday week, last night we saw a new version of Swan Lake choreographed by Anjelin Prelocaj. Stunning. 1. Just "Terrapin Station Sunrise", not the album:

    3. "Sunrise" was always misplaced, and underappreciated. Like many, I thought it was not only the worst song on the album, but didn't even belong there. I also got bored during some of the later sections of Terrapin Station, and found the long fade into "meh" nothingness at the end unsatisfying. Then it occurred to me that not only is the orchestral arrangement of "Sunrise" entirely consistent with the long suite, it also mirrors some of its themes, musically and lyrically; the storyteller motif is present in both. And this forgotten song contains some of Garcia's most beautiful scored playing. There's a fairly obvious place for the song to fit, without interrupting the flow and using in-key crossfades, so that's where it goes. But the songs gorgeous coda doesn't fit here, so it now acts as a tag to the entire piece, with the medicine man's heartbeat drumming making a much more satisfying resolution. And, because I could, I edited out a few minutes of the orchestral "variations" which were little more than repetitions, and which I always suspected were bolted in to make up the length of a side - you shouldn't notice their absence.
The first side was reordered (which you can do yerself, if desirous); "Passenger" is a dynamite straight-ahead rocker and statement album opener, and "Estimated Prophet" a complex piece that now ends the side and leads nicely into the suite.

    5. Thanks, OBG. It's a cheat - the main image is from an AI prompt, and all I had to do what drop in a second AI image ("terrapin on an old suitcase"). About a minute for the whole deal. The type took longer - the logo is an extensively tweaked internet find.

  12. My Boy's Movie Night group just saw Stand by Me. The main characters are 12 year old boys in 1959 and at more than one point in the film one or more of them sing "Have gun will travel is the mark of a man" The (completely different) instrumental piece that opened that show is stuck in my head as well.

I've been collecting the 'Lemon Popsicles & Strawberry Cheesecakes' Series of Rock N Roll Hits as a cheap way of filling in some of the gaps in my Rock N' Roll collection and I've got to the point where there is only one in the series I'm missing.... 'Magic Moments'.

Is there a pill I can take to rid myself of it? Its been going around and around and around .
