Just as Art Tatum could make a piano sound like an orchestra, Joe Pass
could do the same with a guitar.
This is a nice 4CD overview of Joe's recordings for producer Norman Granz's Pablo label from 1973 to 1992, featuring him in a variety of settings.
CD1 is some of Joe's finest solo studio performances from the "Virtuoso" series of releases.
CD2 is Joe in small group studio contexts, including duets with guitarist Herb Ellis, a trio with Oscar Peterson on piano and Ray Brown on bass, and a quartet with Duke Ellington on piano, Brown on bass, and Louis Bellson on drums.
CD3 is live solo and group performances.
CD4 is Joe's oh-so-sympathetic accompaniment for artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, and duet tracks with guitarist John Pisano, tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims, and bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson.
I've seen Joe live in most of the above settings, and he was nothing short of breathtaking, in fact he was the best guitarist I've ever seen, and I've seen all the greats, in all genres, active from the 1960s to present. Joe was all about technique, with no gimmicks, effects, pedal boards, etc. - he didn't need them.
One time in the 80s, I saw him at The Blue Note jazz club in Greenwich Village, and after the show, instead of walking off-stage, he stayed, mingled, shook hands, signed autographs, and had brief conversations with everyone who hung around. What struck me the most about meeting Joe, was his lack of ego, and his down to earth personality. Joe Pass was a true gentleman.
If you want to freeload 'Guitar Virtuoso' tell us what was your favorite TV cartoon show, when you were a child.

Tom Terrific and Manfred The WonderDog from the magic screen of Captain Kangaroo, hi Mr. Greenjeans. Of course I can not remember a single episode, but I do have a t-shirt of Tom & Manfred.
ReplyDeleteThanks Babs
Rocky & Bullwinkle featuring Boris, Natasha and Mr Big.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of 'Fractured Fairy Tales', and adore Edward Everett Horton's voice.
DeleteMy favorite, was and still is, Rocky and Bullwinkle.
ReplyDeleteSoupy Sales was a close second.
Deletemay have already, but it might be TopCat Neal T
ReplyDeleteSign me up for Top Cat, too! I didn't learn until much later it was based on the Phil Silvers Show.
ReplyDeleteTop Cat!
The most effectual!
Top Cat!
Who's intellectual!
Close friends get to call him T.C.,
Providing it's with dignity!
Top Cat!
The indisputable leader of the gang
He's the boss, he's a VIP, he's a championship
He's the most tip top
Top Cat
Yes, he's the chief, he's a king
But above everything
He's the most tip top
Top Cat!
(I don't think the lyrics are "whose intellectual close friends ..." because his pals ain't too smart.)
'Providing it's with dignity!'. I could never work out what was said at the end of that line.
DeleteArnold Stang is the voice imitating Phil Silvers. I've always liked Arnold in the Sinatra flick, 'The Man with the Golden Arm'. He's also a scream in, 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World'.
DeleteGreat choices, Top Cat, Rocky & Bullwinkle, (Soupy, was he a cartoon? Loved him). But the best was Bugs Bunny. The originals with Mel Blanc and the music of Carl Staling. Probably the beginning of my musical adventures. And a tip of the hat to Felix The Cat and Betty Boop. When cartoons were psychedelic.
ReplyDeleteAnd the early Popeyes made yer eyes pop - incredible 3D backgrounds.

ReplyDeleteJohnny Quest - that theme song still gets me. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIhEpjnaNlo
ReplyDeleteOh, and Joe Pass is the 2d greatest guitarist to ever step foot on the planet (Django is 1st). Saw him once in a small club, and it was a solo setting. I don't believe that there is a living person who could do what he did without the us of overdubs.
With Charlie Christian, coming in a close third.
DeleteAbsolutely!
Deletemy favorites are still the Max Fleischer cartoons, Koko, Betty Boop, Popeye, Superman,
ReplyDeleteIntroduced me to Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway

ReplyDeleteBill And Ben, graduating to Rag Tag And Bobtail and then Huckleberry Hound and Gang. Couldn't hack Andy Pandy. Thought he was a bit of a ponce, in the English Upper Crust/ Ruling Class tradition.
ReplyDeleteSo many good ones here that I love (Looney Tunes, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Johnny Quest, Scooby Doo, Popeye). Rocky & Bullwinkle would probably win my vote but Wacky Races was fun too if completely insubstantial.
