Johnny Winter - 'Second Winter'

Second Winter is the third studio album by Texas blues guitarist Johnny Winter, and was released in 1969.

Those of you of a certain age may remember it was released as a three-sided LP, with a blank fourth side on the original vinyl.  Speaking of remembrances, Jerry my husband (then boyfriend), who was very stoned at the time, accidentally played side four, which did wonders for the stylus.

Johnny starts it all off by showing off his soulful voice on a cover of Percy Mayfield’s "Memory Pain," before he surrenders the spotlight to Edgar’s nimble keys on the self-penned "I’m Not Sure." Johnny strangles the neck of his Gibson Firebird’s neck on Dennis Collins’ "The Good Love."  Parts of the album sound like a ‘50s rock 'n' roll dance party, as Johnny wails his way across classics like "Slippin’ and Slidin"’ and "Miss Ann" (both made famous by Little Richard), and Chuck Berry’s ripping "Johnny B. Goode."  Johnny's strong songwriting is on display here, with the amusingly contradictory "I Love Everybody" that features some tasty slide guitar.  "I Hate Everybody" is a jazz-based departure, while "Fast Life Rider" sounds decidedly experimental and then there's the tongue-in-cheek "Hustled Down in Texas"

But the biggest surprise was saved for last: a reinvention of Bob Dylan’s "Highway 61 Revisited" featuring a slide-guitar tour-de-force that would go down as a career-defining track that became a major component of his set list, for the rest of his life.

Today's freeload is the 2CD Legacy Edition, from 2004.

CD1 is the original album, with two previously unreleased bonus tracks, 'Early In The Morning' and 'Tell The Truth'

  1. I'd normally say Spring, but we're already in permanent Summer, or so it seems around here...

  2. Bugs Bunny: Duck season! Daffy Duck: Wabbit season! Bugs: Duck season! Daffy: Wabbit season! Bugs: Duck season! Daffy: Wabbit season! Bugs: Wabbit season! Daffy: Duck season! Bugs: Wabbit season! Daffy: I say it's duck season, and I say FIRE! [BLAM!]

    1. Never not funny! As is the "pronoun problem" exchange between Bugs and Daffy.

  3. Thai winter, when temperatures drop sometimes to just above 20 degrees Celcius and you can see many Thais all dressed up in heavy clothes... Dutch late spring when nature comes back to life again and temperatures turn almost warm!

  4. The time of the season is Spring. The weeds are growing. It is not so cold as Winter when you keep a fire going. Summer is too hot in the desert. Seasons in the Sun. Fall is good but things are dying and the wind is coming and Fire season begins. Then it's Winter again and you hope you have enough firewood.

But I do like Vivaldi's Four Seasons.

  6. I like summer the best.
Hot weather suits me fine, locally grown organic vegetables and fruits, going to the beach, and having parties on the deck, on my roof.

  7. I love autumn for the garden harvests we've nurtured from seedlings and for the end of fire season here in the southern Oregon mountains with the arrival of sustained rain and snow. But that date gets later each year as our planet warms.

  8. As always, thanks Babs. Well I like the winter least, spring is good, new growth & warmer temps, summer is good (rooftop parties at Babs') & I also like the fall, I miss seeing the Quaking Aspens turn an entire mountain range bright yellow/gold for the brief moment before they turn into bare trees.

  11. Fall is my favorite. I live in Boston and it's very beautiful here, plus the summer heat and humidity disappears. This album is my favorite by him and side 4 is FANTASTIC.

  12. Spring is my yearly rebirth. I don't know why we humans don't hibernate, even with the milder Winters we've 'enjoyed' here in Blighty in recent years (all that damp, murky, windscreen-clearing overpopulated darkness-delimited confinement). Spring is like being rescued from being trapped down a mine-shaft.

    1. Ha, Fanny my thoughts too. I went on what was supposed to be a short walking holiday last week, two of the five days rained mostly all day. Upon arriving home I noticed a 'damp' smell in my office and found mould growing. I await the years rebirth soon, though the weather report says more rain, this is the wettest winter I can remember in England.

  13. Rahsaan Roland Kirk put out his LP,.The Case of the 3 Sided Dream in Audio Color in the mid 1970s. One night I put on side 4 to confirm it was entirely silent, knowing that Rahsaan was a notorious trickster. I'd more or less forgotten about the record silently tracking on my turntable. It was only when the stylus hit the last few grooves of side 4 that my speakers cackled with Kirk's maniacal laughter—it did exactly what he'd intended: scared the crap out of me.

    1. I did the same thing, for the same reasons. Also, because, it had grooves, as most 3 sided LPs had a smooth side.

Football (soccer) season followed by summer

  15. I'm pretty sure it was the Jimi Hendrix Live At Winterland that was a three sided album. They pressed it on clear vinyl so you could see the grooves from the other side through the record. Side 4 looked like it would play. I never did that again.

  18. Any time is the right time by me. Maybe early summer when we can turn the heating off.
I missed out on this download, expired, please upload at yr conv. Meanwhile let me expatiate on the bonus tracks,

Early In The Morning, a Louis Jordan song done by Ray Charles. Ray did a few of these, all good, "Outskirts of Town", "Don't Let The Sun..", "Let the Good Times Roll".
This one is notable for a lyric change. Jordan sings "I went to Jimmy Lou's to get something to eat", Ray sings "I went to Dooky Chase..." (alerting pmac)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dooky_Chase%27s_Restaurant

Tell the Truth is also associated with Ray, it's the final track on his 1959 live album. When we saw him in 63 lots of people were calling for it, to no avail.
only a couple of years ago did I look at the composer credits and spot that it was by L Pauling, guitarist & MD for the greatest group you never heard of, originators of "Think" and "Dedicated to the One I Love".
