Jimmy "Duck" Holmes - 'Cypress Grove'

78-year-old
Jimmy "Duck" Holmes is pretty much the last surviving link to the Bentonia style of blues, which was initially brought to public attention by Skip James.  Bentonia is a town located in Yazoo County, Mississippi.

As a child, Jimmy lived next door to Henry Stuckey (1897-1966), the man credited with pioneering the Bentonia style.  Sadly,
Henry Stuckey was never recorded, but he passed on his style to Skip James (1902-1969) and Jack Owens (1904-1997), who further refined the style.  Jack Owens became Jimmy’s mentor, directly influencing his musical journey.

In the 1970s and 80s, ethnomusicologists Alan Lomax and David Evans recorded Jimmy, but it wasn't until 2003 that he released his first album.

Jimmy also owns and operates the oldest juke joint in Mississippi, The Blue Front Cafe (pictured above), which his parents opened in 1948.

On March 31, 2017, the U.S. Postal Service celebrated the 200th anniversary of Mississippi statehood with the above first class stamp, featuring a photograph of the hands and guitar of Jimmy “Duck” Holmes.

‘Cypress Grove,’ released in October 2019 on the Easy Eye Sound label, received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional Blues Album at the 63rd annual Grammy Awards.

Produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, the album aimed to introduce Jimmy to a wider audience.  Auerbach, also the founder of the Easy Eye Sound record label, sought to capture the essence of a typical Saturday night at Jimmy’s Blue Front Cafe.

Auerbach invited Jimmy to his Easy Eye Sound Studio in Nashville for a few days to record 'Cypress Grove.'  The album captures the vibrant atmosphere of the Blue Front Cafe, with Jimmy accompanied by a group of smokin' musicians
to join himself and Dan Auerbach on guitars.

The band featured Sam Bacco on drums, the principal percussionist in the Nashville Symphony, with a diverse background in rock, country, pop, and bluegrass sessions.  Eric Deaton, the master of modern Delta and Hill Country blues bass.  Marcus King, a rising roots and rock guitarist.

'Cypress Grove' features a blend of blues standards by legendary artists like Skip James, Muddy Waters, and Willie Dixon, as well as Jimmy’s original compositions.  Each note on the album exudes country blues tradition, with Jimmy’s gritty vocals evoking the suffering and joy of generations of Delta bluesmen and their people.  The album’s stark beauty brings the Delta to life, creating a captivating listening experience.

The freeload is a
24bit/48kHz vinyl rip, and a great introduction to Jimmy "Duck" Holmes.

For the freeload, tell us about musical artists or groups, that you feel don't or didn't get the acclaim they should have.

  2. There are a number, but I'd include BRLA's Henry Gray, a great blues pianist with Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and literally dozens of others; Greenwood, Mississippi's Hubert Sumlin, a great blues guitarist; Austin's Jon Dee Graham (Whippets, Skunks, True Believers, singer~songwriter); The True Believers; the omnipresent but somehow never breaking out Syd Straw; Robertsfors, Sweden's Sahara Hot Nights; Vancouver's Riff Randalls; on any given night, though pmac's mmv, NOLA's James Booker and his piano; Ziggy Elman (for my father)

  3. Artists deserving of greater audiences and acclaim are legion. I was just listening to Forest City Joe, a harp player with a very human tone and deep country feel. A duo I caught some years ago, never really caught fire with record buyers; the Civil Wars broke up despite having one of the most gorgeous duet styles out there, vocally speaking. I'm also a huge advocate for Olu Dara, Sun Rahs, former trumpeter who has had a fascinating career following his run in the Arkestra.

  4. ANON RF: Couple of UK groups in the 90's: Doll By Doll; Screaming Blue Messiahs. The now forgotten beat group The Big Three. Mebbe Lee Michaels, Emitt Rhodes, Mad River...

  5. Man, I literally could write a book. There's one New Orleans' rnb artist who even escaped notoriety in his hometown - vocalist Diamond Joe (real name Joe Maryland). Only released about 13 singles, but, all are simply awe inspiring. His version of Fair Play is just so damn sublime (and, one of the few songs to prominently feature a zither). Got a decent paying job working at a plant, and decided the steady money was better than chasing the musician dream.
Alvin "Red" Tyler was a great tenor sa player, noted mostl as a sideman in the Fats Domino band. But, he also released two phenomenal straight ahead jazz lps on the Rounder Records label in the late 80s, Heritage and Graciously.
A few others I'll just throw out by name for the sake of brevity:
RNB guitarist and singer, Alvin "Shine" Robinson
    Blues guitarist Walter "Wolfman" Washington
    Singer extraordinaire, Johnny Adams
As Eric noted, the pianist for all seasons, James Booker
Spanish, by way of Denmark, jazz pianist (second coming of Monk), Oscar Rifbjerg
Jazz trumpter/pianist (plays both simultaneously at times) and composer from New Zealand - Trevor Coleman
Manouche guitarist from Seville - Paul Laborde
Another manouche guitarist, courtesy of Belgium, Fanou Torracinta

  6. With acclaim, do we mean critics or the public? I would go with my usual trifecta of Warren Zevon, Gene Clark and Neal Casal, but they all usually got great write-ups but (too) little in the way of audiences, compared to the quality of their output...

  7. Arthur Lee/Love never got the wider audience they deserved - and also Terry Reid.

  8. Spirit, Buck Curran, Bert Jansch, Slim Harpo and many, many others.

  10. Phantom Of The Rock OperaOctober 29, 2025 at 8:02 PM

Just a few from a very long list and even though they did get some recognition they never got enough The Zombies, The Easybeats, The Creation, The Action, The Eyes, The Misunderstood, The Artwoods, The Birds, and from later the Chords, The Purple Hearts, Squire, Back To Zero and from the 1990's Orange.

  11. Like others here, I have too many, as I've supplemented my diet of mainstream pop/rock with stuff from the byways (including the fertile grounds of American vernacular music from the 1920s-1950s that informed rock). So I'll weigh in on ones already mentioned, in support!
Slim Harpo (altho he actually was commercially successful!)
Phantom of the Rock Opera's list of freakbeat wonders
Screaming Blue Messiahs (Oh yes indeed; Bill Carter, where are you?!?!)
Spirit (if not at this here blog, I've proclaimed elsewhere how 12 Dreams has been a favorite album since my childhood)
