Here's a really nice "Boot", from good ol' Zimmy.
'The Dandelion label released From Newport To The Ancient Empty Streets in LA in 1998. It contains both the 1964 and 1965 Newport shows, as well as the Hollywood Bowl show from 1965.
The release compiles the majority of the two Newport gigs, and the contrast is remarkable: while the 1964 audience treats sublime, introspective songs like "To Ramona" and "All I Really Want to Do" with reverence and awe. The Newport 1965 crowd appears to be on the verge of chaos, and I'm not sure why. Maybe the cause was the intensity of the music, or inadequate sound system, or the shortness of the set? Whatever the reason, the heightened energy is perceptible, and it motivates Bob and his band to new heights. Conspicuous by absence from Newport 1964 is "It Ain't Me Babe" which for an unknown reason was omitted.
Bob's show at The Hollywood Bowl, from September 3, 1965, is in its entirety on this release. This legendary show has guitarist Robbie Robertson, drummer Levon Helm, keyboardist Al Kooper, and bassist Harvey Brooks, backing Bob. While lacking the primal force of his future electric tour with the Hawks, the performance is nevertheless excellent, capturing the complexity and potency of songs like "Tombstone Blues," "Maggie's Farm," and "Like a Rolling Stone" in full.
This is one of my favorite Zimmy boots, and has soundboard-quality fidelity.

And here I sit so patiently
ReplyDeleteWaiting to find out what price
You have to pay to get out of
Going through all these things twice
Idiot wind
ReplyDeleteBlowing like a circle around my skull
From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol
Idiot wind
Blowing every time you move your teeth
You're an idiot, babe
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe
I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail
ReplyDeletePoisoned in the bushes and blown out on the trail
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn
"Come in," she said
"I'll give you shelter from the storm"
Oh, what’ll you do now, my blue-eyed son?
ReplyDeleteOh, what’ll you do now, my darling young one?
I’m a-goin’ back out ’fore the rain starts a-fallin’
I’ll walk to the depths of the deepest black forest
Where the people are many and their hands are all empty
Where the pellets of poison are flooding their waters
Where the home in the valley meets the damp dirty prison
Where the executioner’s face is always well hidden
Where hunger is ugly, where souls are forgotten
Where black is the color, where none is the number
And I’ll tell it and think it and speak it and breathe it
And reflect it from the mountain so all souls can see it
Then I’ll stand on the ocean until I start sinkin’
But I’ll know my song well before I start singin’
And it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall
Thanks Babs
“The answer is blowin in the Wind “ anyway is my favorite verse.
ReplyDeleteGood afternoon, everyone, my english is not so good and perhaps there are better lyrics, but this is from my all time favourite song:
ReplyDeleteThey say everything can be replaced
They say every distance is not near
So I remember every face
Of every man who put me here
Kindly regards, Mike
There's beauty in the silver, singin' river
ReplyDeleteThere's beauty in the sunrise in the sky
But none of these and nothing else can touch the beauty
That I remember in my true love's eyes
Disillusioned words like bullets bark
ReplyDeleteAs human gods aim for their mark
Make everything from toy guns that spark
To flesh-coloured Christs that glow in the dark
Easy to see without looking too far
That not much is really sacred
I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
ReplyDeleteAnd just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You'd know what a drag it is to see you
ReplyDeleteWe drove that car as far as we could
Abandoned it out West
Split up on a dark sad night
Both agreeing it was best
She turned around to look at me
As I was walkin’ away
I heard her say over my shoulder
“We’ll meet again someday on the avenue”

ReplyDeleteJust stayed up watching Godzilla (1998) My question for Babs is, did you have to evacuate when Godzilla attacked New York?
ReplyDeletePS - good quote Dr Robert.
Luckily no. At the time my friend, Vajrayogini, and I were visiting the tiny twin priestesses, The Shobijin on Infant Island.
Deletegood to hear Babs.
DeleteThanks Babs.
DeleteThe anonymouse comment was me. steVe. Glad Godzilla didn't get ya. Thought maybe I was watching a documentary.
Another fav
DeleteThey asked for some collateral and I pulled down my pants.
You see me on the street, you always act surprised
ReplyDeleteYou say "how are you?", "good luck", but ya don't mean it
When you know as well as me, you'd rather see me paralyzed
Why don't you just come out once and scream it
Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
ReplyDelete“Rip down all hate,” I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow
Ah, but I was so much older then
I’m younger than that now
Oh, God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son”
ReplyDeleteAbe said, “Man, you must be puttin' me on”
God say, “No.”
Abe say, “What?”
God say, “You can do what you want, Abe, but
The next time you see me comin' you better run”
Well, Abe said, “Where you want this killin' done?"
God said, “Out on Highway 61”
ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time you dressed so fine
Threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
Yeah, people'd call, say "Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were just kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
And now you don't walk so proud
Now you don't talk so loud
About having to be scrounging your next meal
How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
A complete unknown
Just like a rolling stone?

I'm a poet, and I know it
ReplyDeleteHope I don't blow it
May you stay forever young
ReplyDeleteThis isn't really my favorite but it's from his funniest song ever and I'm amused by the way he was often willing to throw in non sequiturs if they rhymed.
ReplyDeleteWell, the last I heard of Arab, he was stuck on a whale
That was married to the deputy sheriff of the jail
But the funniest thing was when I was leavin' the bay
I saw three ships sailin' there, were all heading my way
I asked the captain what his name was and how come he didn't drive a truck
He said his name was Columbus, I just said, "Good luck"
Well, the moral of the story
ReplyDeleteThe moral of this song
Is simply that one should never be
Where one does not belong
So when you see your neighbor carrying somethin'
Help him with his load
And don't go mistaking Paradise
For that home across the road

Mumbles beat me to it but I'm going to break the rules as usual and just paste the chorus here which sums up my sentiment about this historical moment:
ReplyDeleteAnd it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
It’s a hard rain’s a-gonna fall
Broken voices on broken phones
ReplyDeleteTake a deep breath, feel like you're choking
Everything is broken
I live on a street named after a saint,
ReplyDeleteWomen in my church wear powder & paint.
Where the jews & the catholics & muslims all pray.
I can smell a protty from a mile away.
I've seen a dozen verses that I'd have been proud to post. But the mind cannot always come up with "le mot juste." I thought of several songs I like AND can remember lyrics to, starting with "It Takes A Lot To Laugh..." then "Desolation Row," "Stuck Inside of Mobile..." and "To Ramona." Then, I thought of this:
ReplyDeleteThe machine guns are roaring
The puppets heave rocks
The fiends nail time bombs
To the hands of the clocks
Call me any name you like
I will never deny it
Farewell Angelina
The sky is erupting
I must go where it’s quiet
