'At The BBC: Radio & TV Sessions And Concerts: 1964-1994' is a 5CD - 1DVD set that was released in 2012 (the freeload is the 5CDs).
Essentially this new box is
an expansion of the 2001 'Kinks BBC Sessions 1964-1977', with more thorough selections from the early mid-60s sessions,
the full live sets from Golders Green Hippodrome 1974
and Finsbury Park 1977, a handful of mid-90s Radio 1 appearances, plus a
few performances that were wiped from the BBC archives but have been
recovered from fan recordings.
The
music for this set was remastered by Kinks aficionado Andrew Sandoval with Dan Hersch. The excellent booklet (included in the freeload) by Peter Doggett, tells the story of the
band’s history at the BBC
This is the proverbial treasure trove of seminal recordings over a variety
of years and periods from The Kinks career.
If you compare the English to the Japanese, you can teach yourself another language!
For the freeload, answer two questions:
What are your favorite Kinks albums?
What are your favorite Kinks songs?

album: The Village Green Preservation Society
ReplyDeletesongs: Days, Waterloo Sunset, Lola
Favourite album "Something Else" - favourite song "Do you remember Walter?" - it's theme always hits home.
ReplyDelete"Do you remember Walter?" has such a wonderful melody.
DeleteI was a very crass 16 when it came out, and I remember tearing up at "Walter"...
DeleteSee My Friends -- Muzak McMusics
ReplyDeleteFavourite Albums? Two which have been in my collection for almost 50 years. Top is "A Well Respected Kinks" and second is "Sunny Afternoon" both of which were Marble Arch compilations released in the mid 60's. Sunny Afternoon is the one with the photo of the band sitting in an open top psychedelic car.
ReplyDeleteMy top five songs, 4 of which are on Well respected Kinks whilst favourite song is on Sunny Afternoon are
1. I'm Not Like Everybody Else
2. Where Have All The Good Times Gone
3. Tired Of Waiting For You
4. Till The End of the Day
5. All Day And All Of the Night
That said the Kinks are one of my all time top five bands so they wrote a lot of brilliant music.
Oh and I forgot to say absolutely fab groovy post Babs. Thank You
DeleteMy favorite Kinks albums are, 'Face to Face', 'Something Else' and 'The Village Green Preservation Society'
ReplyDeleteFavorite songs are, "Lola", "Situation Vacant", "Victoria" and "Do you remember Walter?"
I can't recall ever hearing an entire Kinks album. Sheltered life I guess. That said, All Day & All Of The Night, (Wish I Could Fly Like) Superman, Where Have All The Good Times Gone?, Lola, Celluloid Heroes, Tired Of Waiting For You, Apeman, Dedicated Follower Of Fashion. I saw them in Albuquerque in 1979, it was a good show. Thanks Babs
ReplyDeleteAlbums: Village Green, Muswell Hillbillys. Songs: Dedicated Follower Of Fashion, Dead End Street, Waterloo Sunset, Sitting In My Hotel, Prince of the Punks, I could go on & on, you know...
ReplyDeleteFavorite album: One From The Road. I saw them on this tour and the show was fantastic.
ReplyDeleteFavorite song: Low Budget (Live versions)
Me n my brother and heck, the whole old neighborhood, were into the Kinks. My first album by them was Face To Face. Later after seeing them I got into Everybody's In Showbiz. Favorite songs are Picture Book & Waterloo Sunset. The Kinks were one of the groups I saw multiple times. They really connected with the audience. Demon Alcohol was always a crowd pleaser.
ReplyDeleteHad an 8-Track tape of The Great Lost Kinks Album. The original one, not one of the later bootlegs. To me it was just as good as The Kink Kronicles, a favorite compilation while many of their albums weren't available in the US at the time.
DeleteActually, I love all there albums except Soap Opera. Favorite albums are Lola vs Powerman, Muswell Hillbillies, Everybody’s in Show Biz, Face to Face.
ReplyDeleteFavorite songs: Strangers, I’m not like anybody else, catch me now I’m falling, Tired of Waiting, Lola

DeleteSoap Opera had Ducks On The Wall, Face In The Crowd, Have Another Drink. I liked the album. Maybe not their greatest, but I liked it. As a concept.
Your opinion is appreciated. I know it wasn't a high point in the Kinks Career.
SteVe,
DeleteI listen to the Kinks a lot. They are with The Band & The Beatles, my favorite rock band. However, I haven’t listened to Soap Opera in a while. On your advice, I will give it a relisten.

Everybody's in Shiwbiz - picked it up as a school boy in a junk shop in the mid 70s principally because it had Lola on. Took it home and was incredibly disappointed by the live singalong version. Then got to love the studio album and couldn't belief that nobody seemed to now Celluloid Heroes. I must dig out the live album again and reassess it - apparently there's now an extended version of it.
ReplyDeleteSingles - all of them up to mid 70s - has there ever been such a long run of consistently classic pop songs written by one guy? (i.e. not by two guys)
My Supersonic Rocket Ship. Skin & Bones. So many songs. Nobby, while the Kinks were banned from touring the States, their albums were hard to find. That's why they were a guilty pleasure for a while with me & my friends. Later we would go see them as often as possible. Saw them do Schooldays on stage. Great show. Even their bad albums were good live.
DeleteAlbums:
ReplyDeleteSomething Else
The Village Green Preservation Society
Songs:
Days
Waterloo Sunset
and if they count:
Death Of A Clown
Susannah's Still Alive
Death Of A Clown. Classic.
DeleteWaterloo Sunset too.
DeleteTwo Birds of a feather - Celluloid Heroes & (The Byrds) Citizen Kane.
ReplyDeleteRemember when those big round video screens were new. During School Days the members of The Kinks were lined up passing in front of the camera that went to the screen. All members ducked down and ran to the back of the line to pass through again. Including a fat bearded guy in a leotard that played the part of the pregnant girl. The disgraced. Funny as hell if you'd seen it. God bless the Kinks.
ReplyDeleteFavorite album seems to be Something Else (by a hair over VGPS, Kinda, M Hillbillies, Arthur...). Favorite song: Days (by a long shot - which is saying a lot because I can think of 30-40 masterpieces from RDD)
ReplyDeleteAlbums: Village Green and Arthur
ReplyDeleteSongs: Victoria, Where Have All the Good Times Gone
Albums: Something Else, To the Bone
ReplyDeleteSongs: Autumn Almanac, Waterloo Sunset, Come Dancing
Album: My digitization of the Kinks / NBC The Source radio broadcast is available at: https://voodoowagon.blogspot.com/2024/05/nbc-source-82-6-kinks-palladium-nyc-dec.html
ReplyDeleteFor me, I can boil the Kinks down to Waterloo Sunset, one of the most moving songs I've ever heard, all about the distances between people and places...and between the song's narrator and everyone else. Terry and Julie may cross over the river, but he can't.
ReplyDeleteBut it would be foolish to simmer 'em down to a single song, as I love dozens of Kinks songs.
Everything (LPs, singles, EPs, Dutch B-sides...) inclusive from Face to Face through Arthur, plus half the cuts off Lola vs. & a few essentials on Percy. Ray & Dave may have been the most consistent & productive pop songwriters in England during that stretch.
ReplyDeleteThat a very nice period reproduction on cover of classic Radio Tines..nicely done. I went to the same art college (Hornsey) as Ray so always felt an affinity. I used to live round the corner from the Konk studio (now gone) in Turnpike Lane/Crouch End. LP Village Green Song I'm Not like Everybody Else.
ReplyDeleteFave albums:
ReplyDeleteSomething Else
Lola versus Powerman and The Moneygoround Part One
Muswell Hillbillies
Songs (today):
Till the End of the Day
Days
Shangri-La
Get Back in the Line
Ray is the greatest pure songwriter of his generation. There. I said it.
Album - Arthur Face To Face Kelvin Hall
ReplyDeleteSongs Genevieve, Where are they now (Where are all the Angry Young Men?) Autumn Almanac (he should have said Clacton rather than Blackpool)

Lots of love here for the Ray/Kinks. One thing that comes to mind is Ray's take on English musichall, so superior to the more famous McCartney version.
ReplyDeleteBeen watching a murder mystery series on tv and it had a musical theme running through it . Spotted it was from the Lola album, written by Dave D. It's really lovely

I wonder how the TV people picked up on it. (series centred on a pair of twins. Song is obvs about R & D)
