Neil Young - 'The Archives Vol. 1 - 1963–1972'

'The Archives Vol. 1 1963-1972' is an 8CD box set from everybody's favorite uncle.  Released in 2009, it's the first of several in the Archives series, which will eventually chronicle the Neil's entire career.  The box features previously released as well as rare and unreleased material from Neil's early years with The Squires and Buffalo Springfield, it also includes cuts, demos, outtakes and alternate versions of songs from his albums 'Neil Young', 'Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere', 'After the Gold Rush', and 'Harvest', as well as tracks he recorded with both Crazy Horse and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young during this time.  Also included in the set are several live discs.

For the freeload, if you could only listen to one Neil Young album (studio, live, compilation or bootleg) for the rest of your life, which one (and only one) would it be?

  1. Tough choice. Its between After the Gold Rush and Harvest. Probably Harvest since the songs are a little more nuanced.

  2. Harvest! Kindly regards, Mike

  3. Decade is a pretty good compilation.

  4. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. I can say this because I bought it when it first came out in 1969 and it continues to be my go-to Neal Young LP to this day.

That being said, let's hope we never can only listen to one Neil Young album for the rest of our life.

  5. Probably Decade as it covers a lot of bases.

  6. Sounds a little pretentious, but my alt version of Harvest would be it...

  7. On The Beach, thanks Babs

  8. I know I should choose either Harvest of After the Gold Rush (which I believe are the best NY's albums), but my heart will always be with Rust Never Sleeps...

  9. So it's springtime 1978, Reno & I (best buds since early 70's, in Kansas) are in Santa Fe, cruising the plaza, in his red 1965 Volvo 122. We circle the plaza a couple of times, it's a beautiful day, sun is out and everything is beginning to warm up a little. We are headed west on Alameda, that runs parallel to the Santa Fe River, we are at the corner of Alameda & Shelby street, as we drive by I look right & there on the corner is a skinny guy in a flannel shirt with a very wide brimmed hat, sorta like a sombrero, but not exactly, head down, he's playing a Martin D-45 with abalone inlays. The guitar rings & shines. I look at Reno & say, hey, there's Neil Young sitting on the corner, playin' a tune. I'm kinda beside myself as Neil Young is, well, Neil Young! I ask Reno to go around the block again, (I thought we might be able to smoke one with Neil, hah!), we get back to Alameda & Shelby, nothing, nobody, no guitar, no flannel shirt, no hat, nothing, not a trace.
A couple of days, maybe a week before that we had breakfast at Tia Sophia's, they had a great green chile omelette & terrible coffee. Joni Mitchell is 2 booths away enjoying her own breakfast. Guessing that Neil mighta been visiting Joni, I could be wrong, but you never know. Santa Fe in the 70's was pretty crazy. Thanks Babs

  10. First memory of Uncle Neil was my sister recording a C60 with a microphone off his BBC in concert on the telly in the early 70s and having to be totally silent until it ended. Next memory was me taping John Peel's 40th birthday show off the radio at the height of punk (well OK post punk by then) in 1978 and hearing Like a Hurricane for the first time, which lead me to buy Decade whicb is still my go to Neil Young record and therefore gets my vote.

  11. Tonight's the Night. It's the only one I regularly listen to, too ragged to tire of. If you'll excuse me now, I gotta load that Econoline.

    1. If a second choice was available, this would be the one. Thanks Babs

  12. Everybody Knows This is Nowhere. The symbiosis between Young and Danny Whitten stil astonishes me. And Crazy Horse shambles along like no other rhythm section. I still get a rush off the long form songs "Cowgirl in the Sand" and especially, "Down By The River."
Thanks for this bounteous Neil helping, Babs!

    1. 'Everybody Knows This is Nowhere' is such a classic.

      There will be more 'Archives'

  13. I'm going with 'Decade'.
My second choice is 'Live Rust' the soundtrack to uncle Neil's concert film 'Rust Never Sleeps'.

    1. I love how (in Live Rust and maybe the film too) Neil forgets the lyrics to Thrasher. Saw it in a theatre when it came out, went with a friend who claimed to hate NY, but admitted it was a pretty good film. I'm probably going with Everybody Knows as my favourite, but this could (and frequently does) change.

  15. Decade seems like the best choice. For me it's the only choice as it's impossible to choose just one of the albums.
    Thanks, Babs.

  16. I grabbed the archive earlier. My favorite was the '71 Massey Hall concert.
