In my personal Pantheon of music, Stevie Wonder is right up there with Charlie Parker, The Beatles, Thelonious Monk, The Rolling Stones, Bill Evans, Jimi Hendrix, Charles Mingus, John Coltrane and many, many others. You name the artist, and Stevie can match them in one way or another.
So, here's four 1970s classics, you just can't go wrong with:
For the freeload, what are some of your favorite Stevie Wonder songs?

Living For the City
ReplyDeleteAs, You haven't done nothing
ReplyDeleteAnything between Fingertips and the Hotter Than July album
ReplyDeleteYou Are The Sunshine In My Life, and most all of the tunes on these albums! I'll be grabbing these to update my old copies for sure. Thanx again, Babs!
ReplyDeleteOops, Sunshine OF my life...
DeleteToo many to name but I've always loved Pastime Paradise.
DeleteI love the one two punch of "Pastime Paradise" and "Summer Soft" on 'Songs in the Key of Life'.
DeleteI'd Never Dream You Would Leave in Summer just guts me whenever I hear it.
ReplyDelete1. Living For The City
ReplyDelete2. I Believe
3. Boogie On Reggae Woman
Seasonal Pick: One Little Christmas Tree
Happier Than The Morning Sun, Maybe Your Baby, He's Misstra Know-It-All, They Won't Go When I Go, Happy Birthday, and a bunch of those broken heart ballads.
ReplyDeleteI Was Born to Love Her (from the earlier period) is one of my all-timers.
ReplyDeleteMy first Stevie 45 and still my favorite song is "I Was Made to Love Her." "Creepin'" and "Superstition" round out the top 3.
ReplyDeleteI was a bartender in college and on weekends a guy played acoustic guitar in the bar of this very nice steak and seafood restaurant. He always finished his set with "My Cherie Amour". Great song and great memories. Stevie's 70's run of albums was just phenomenal.
ReplyDelete"Uptight (Everything's Alright)," "Higher Ground," and "Superstition" come to mind. It would have been a tougher challenge to name Stevie Wonder songs I didn't like.
ReplyDeleteThese are three that I was thinking about as well. Also, they all sound just like him and no one else.
DeleteI can think of other ones to mention, but that's a fantastic trinity, BlueNote! "Tuesday Heartbreak" hasn't been mentioned... This run of albums is so good, it belies commentary...

You Are The Sunshine of My Life.
ReplyDeleteThe relentless drive of I Was Made To Love Her (and the little motif at the end of each stanza)
ReplyDeleteThe grit of Livin' For The City (and the memory of hearing it back in the day on the radio)
Fave, tho: On the regular I find myself using my mouth to do the instro track to Master Blaster, with a combo of hums, clicks and other vocal effects, and I love getting the rhythm a little behind the melody in real time.

ReplyDeleteI agree with most of the above selections to which I'dd add:
ReplyDeleteLove's in Need of Love
Isn't She Lovely
He's Misstra Know it All
Sir Duke
Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours
I agree with your assessment Babs, Stevie is a colossus the equal of the masters you name check. His influence on soul and R&B is inestimable and his distinct chops on harmonica and synth are unequaled.
There's to much to name them all, but i miss Sir Duke in all the postings.
ReplyDeleteThey Won't Go When I Go.
ReplyDeleteStrange melody, stolen from Marin Marais, French composer of 17th century.
(There was a film, Tous Les Matins Du Monde, about him).
I heard it on France Culture radio station in 78, and couldn't place it until months later.
Now - how the hell did Stevie get to hear it?
Living in the City - hey these four records rival a handful of bands who released four near-perfect records in a row. This wonder streak is astonishing to this day. thanks Babs
