The Good Ol’ Grateful Dead - 'Dave's Picks Vol. 54'

Dave's Picks Volume 54 a 3CD set was released on April 25, 2025, in a limited edition of 25,000 numbered copies, and contains the complete concert recorded on March 26, 1973, at the Baltimore Civic Center in Baltimore, Maryland.

Highlight include classic covers of "Promised Land", "Big River" and "Me And Bobby McGee".  There's also early renditions of "Eyes Of The World," "Here Comes Sunshine"), the prelude to what would officially become "Weather Report Suite," that that would later be cemented on 'Wake of the Flood'.  Oh, and Wolfman Jack introduces, you guessed it, "Ramble On Rose".

Clocking in at a full four hours, 33 songs, it has some of the most purposeful and inspired playing the Grateful Dead ever did.

Due to space limitations on CD3, the encore 'One More Saturday Night' has been placed at the end of CD2.

But wait, there's more!

I was able to snag a copy with a 4th CD: 'Dave's Picks 2025 Bonus Disc',
that has songs from the March 31, 1973, concert at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo, New York.

Both shows were recorded by Kidd Candelario and has been mastered to HDCD specs by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering.

For the freeload, what was the last live show you attended?

  1. Patti Smith in Oxford a few months back - it was wonderful to see her, but a shame that it was in a large seated venue. My preference of course is for the tiny hot sweaty intimate venues where I saw so many great bands when I lived in London from the 60's through to the 80's, but at least there are still places like Cafe Oto where I've seen the Sun Ra Arkestra and Annette Peacock in recent years!

  2. Los Lobos @ E J Thomas Hall, Akron, OH on 8/30/2019. I've so far passed on seeing live music since the pandemic. Overly cautious? Most likely. Missing out? Most definitely. Ready? Almost. Thanks Babs

  6. Billy Joel in a gigantic baseball stadium. For the third time. Which is about two and half times too many. At shows years apart I got to see nearly identical set lists, the same in-between song banter and the same on-stage gimmicks. The worst was several rows from the stage so I could tell he didn’t want to play Piano Man as much as I didn’t want to hear it. The things we do for love.

Back to the Dead - coincidentally my soundboard copy of this show has the same set list edit to fit on CDs (back when we traded physical media). Maybe Grateful Dead Productions is mimicking the tapers. I heard that for one of the more recent commercial releases, they had to go to the taper community for a patch where the vault copy had a gap.

    1. On my advice, my friend in Santa Fe saw Fantastic Negrito on the Plaza in Santa Fe last August for about 3 songs before the show ended due to rain. I'm not positive but I think it was his last stateside show before he headed to Europe. She liked him & bought a cd. Hope you get to see him. Thanks Babs

  8. Duke's line, "Don't get around much anymore" occurs to me more regularly these days. Apart from some mariachis a few weeks ago at a local joint, our last real foray was out to the coast for the Redwood Coast Music Festival last October. Caught some fine roots, blues, country, and soul music.

  9. Embarrassing how long it's been for anything "big-time" (per Ronnie Hawkins): Jonathan Richman at the Mohawk February 2018 & Patti Smith at Stubb's January 2017. Eleanor Ellis in our elderchild's front yard in Maryland last spring. The Resistance Choir of South Central Texas until COVID and since then the woman to whom I am married sings with The Ragin' Grannies. At a recent gig, a young woman next to me said to her friend, "I bet these women are in their 50s"...lol.

  10. Last night I saw saxophonist Nicole Glover with her trio, Tyrone Allen on Bass, and Kayvon Gordon on Drums, at The Village Vanguard.

Tomorrow (and Friday) I’m seeing saxophonist Kenny Garrett, at The Blue Note.

    1. Saw Garrett about 3 months ago in Seville. Was great, but not what I was expecting to some extent. He's much more of an audience interactive showman, especially for someone raised under the tutelage of Miles Davis.

  11. Locally, Monday night saw Manual Callejo, a renowned Sevillian pianist/composer (we go to local jazz events 3-4 times a week in Seville). On a more international basis, saw Martinho da Villa back in Feb.

  13. Jesse Sykes and the Sweet Hereafter opening for Black Mountain (Canada) at the Lodge Room in Los Angeles. A smaller venue where artists from out of town shows don't get too crowded so I was right up front the whole time - was so good!

  14. The last musical event for which I bought a ticket was earlier this month, in the best and biggest local concert hall, seeing the Julia Keefe Indigenous Big Band. They were fantastic, and I really enjoyed myself at the combination of hall, sound, and crowd it drew (there were a number of university big-wigs attending as part of a conference or workshop, and then there were a number of Native Americans from the disparate Northern California tribes). The next three days was my favorite free festival, also on the grounds of the local university. My favorite set was either from Maya Burns or Jessica Malone, both of local repute.
New York City night clubs seem incredibly glamorous from out here in the suburbs.

    1. Manhattan Jazz clubs have an urbane vibe, as opposed to glamorous one, with a crowd (more or less) evenly split between regulars on the jazz scene and tourists. Regulars including “brand name” musicians all know each other, and there are quite a few cliques, especially with those who live in walking distance of the downtown clubs. The thing of it is that Manhattan is a Jazz town, with high quality shows seven nights a week in the clubs and the floating after-hours jam sessions.

Sad to say so long ago I'm not really sure. Its amazing how life sometimes takes over and you forget to take a break. I suspect it was a festival in the noughties or some non name band on some holiday around the same time. Since then family challenges, health considerations and maintaining a large property have really dominated our lives and we really haven't thought about entertainment that much.

  18. Where I live, there is not too much happening with (good) live music. Earlier this year I saw Fatoumata Diawara in a smaller club. The music was good, but a little to much "techno sounding". In the fall of last year I went to see Calexico, who were doing their "Feast of Friends" 20th anniversary tour. They are a great live band.
    Thanks Babs for the Dead!

  19. Files appear to have downloaded perfectly, and look like they'll unzip ... but I get an error message when I attempt to extract. Usually ZIP files are quite *un*fussy here, so I'm wondering if anyone else is having trouble?
It's a very generous and lovely share, Babs, and I thank you (whatever the outcome).

    1. I'm not sure why, I tested the link, and after downloading it, I had no problem unpacking it. But who knows? I've encountered all kinds of "voodoo" with zipfiles and hosting sites.

I've re-zipped the file, and re-uploaded it to workload, try the new link.
