| From the Downs show |
'Dave's Picks, Volume 52' is a show from September 11, 1983, at The Downs in Santa Fe, New Mexico. It was also drummer Mickey Hart's 40th birthday.
This show was recorded by Dan Healy, who for many years was the Grateful Dead's audio engineer. It's a Dead Head favorite, due to the sound quality and set list. It has been traded and distributed for free (Dead Heads are like that) since 1983 (never, ever pay for a Dead boot). Over the years, I've had it cassette, reel to reel, CDR and as FLAC files. Until 'Dave's Picks, Volume 52' was released, my favorite version was 'Hunter's Trix vol. 129'.
Many people consider this show the best of 1983 and some say, the entire 1980s.

Four rainbows in one day. In Donegal, Ireland, early October of this year. Brief rain storms blown away in short order. Spectacular sites in a spectacular place.
ReplyDeleteA double rainbow over the harbor in Guadeloupe. Magical.
ReplyDeleteA stunning double rainbow in Cappadocia, Turkey that persisted for an easy half hour.
ReplyDeleteHope you had a fine Thanksgiving, Babs. It's great to see you back in the blogosphere. We also celebrated with family in the Bay Area, and the hideous head of the political beast never showed itself.
A double in Maui.

ReplyDeleteInterestingly, we get a rainbow projected on a wall in our apartment on a daily basis. We have a huge floor to ceiling window that gets early afternoon sun. There's a table with a piece of ceramic art on it, and when the sun hits the window about 2pm, it casts a rainbow effect on the opposing wall.
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine from NO worked on the GD road crew for several years. His nickname is Freddie Blue. Like scotch, Freddie is an acquired taste. Because he worked on the road crew, he fancies himself to be a musician, and has a friend that books shows at a small bar in NO. We went to one of his gigs there. That's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back.
I get something similar. In my loft, there’s a huge V-shaped skylight made of ridiculously thick glass, that dates back to the 1850s, when my building was a button factory. On sunny days, the skylight creates a very cool prism effect on the walls.
DeleteNice! Out of all the places I have lived, this is the first time I have encountered it. We have a dachshund, and his reactions to it are wild. He started off by barking at it, and now he places his paws on it and scratches it.
DeleteNot a rainbow but a "fogbow". Standing on a mountainside cliff looking west into a deep gorge filled with morning fog. As the rising sun lifted the fog, a complete circular rainbow formed.
ReplyDeleteI've seen many double rainbows in New Mexico. I did not witness the rainbow in the photo above, but I was in Santa Fe at the time. I didn't attend either show. Here, in Ohio I see them once in a while, (sometimes even a double).
ReplyDeleteI try to pinpoint where they end so that I might visit there during a walk. Does the pot of gold rumor only exist while the rainbow is alive? Has anyone ever found a pot of gold at a rainbow's end? Think it's there after the rainbow has left? I've also witnessed a few sundogs here in Ohio. Thanks Babs

Back when I lived in Waltham Vermont, sky spanning rainbows would popup framing the Green Mountain's ridge about 15 miles to the east.
